What Makes Lake Winnie a Top Chattanooga Attraction?
Lake Winnepesaukah, or Lake Winnie as it is affectionately referred to by those in the Chattanooga area, has been a staple attraction for generations. Since 1925, when the property was first purchased and opened to guests, Lake Winnie has been an area attraction that has provided good times to generations of families. In today’s blog post, we wanted to go over some of the reasons that we feel make Lake Winnie one of the top attractions in the Chattanooga area. Keep reading below to learn more!
Atmosphere
Atmosphere is one of those interesting terms that can be hard to define. We’re not saying it’s literally hard to define (plenty of dictionaries offer multiple definitions of the word), instead we are saying that what makes an atmosphere pleasant can be hard to put into words. The atmosphere that surrounds Lake Winnie is one steeped in history, nostalgia, and fun. For decades, Lake Winnie has been a summer fixture for thousands of park guests. All summer long, park guests pass through the gates of Lake Winnie searching for an escape, even if it for just a few hours, from the hustle and bustle of life that exists outside the walls of the park. This atmosphere of fun, coupled with a healthy dose of nostalgia, is what has kept guests coming back for years and is one of the main reasons that Lake Winnie is going to continue to be one of the top attractions in the area.
Location
Nestled just outside of Chattanooga city proper, Lake Winnie is close enough to be convenient but far enough away to feel like a completely different world. Unlike other amusement parks in the area that can feel like concrete jungles, Lake Winnie has been carefully cultivated to provide guests with green spaces that are dispersed throughout the park, offering much needed shady areas and multiple places to lounge when a break is needed. What’s more, the lake from which the park gets its namesake offers wonderful views to the guests and, when the wind hits it just right, a cool, water-filled breeze. Additionally, the central location of Chattanooga itself makes it easy for guests from Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, Knoxville, and many other cities scattered across the Southeast to make a day trip to the park.
The Rides
While the aesthetic of an amusement park is important, the rides are what truly keep people coming back for more. Lake Winnie prides itself on offering some of the best rides in the area, as well as multiple rides that are designed to be kid-friendly. If you are feeling daring, take a ride on the Cannonball Roller Coaster. Designed and Engineered specifically for Lake Winnie in 1967, The Cannonball is one of the oldest wooden roller coasters still in operation, offering a 70-foot drop into 2.272 feet of track. Reaching speeds of up to 50 mph, the Cannonball is sure to have guests gripping their seats with excitement.
In addition to multiple thrill rides such as the Cannonball roller coaster, the Genie, and the Boat Chute, Lake Winnie stepped it up a notch by opening the SoakYa Water Park in 2013. This five-acre water park features two body slides, a crazy river, two tube slides, an 800 ft. Mat Racer, and an interactive water park designed specifically for the park’s younger guests.
