Public Information

Statement from Lake Winnie

The Georgia Department of Insurance and Fire Safety completed its review of the recent rider incident at Lake Winnespesaukah.

The agency determined that the ride at the amusement park performed as expected, and our park employees performed their duties as expected. The sole issue was our delayed reporting of the event.

For over 93 years of operation, Lake Winnie has provided a safe and fun environment for all families that visit our parks. We are proud of that record and at the same time, will continue to find ways to do more.

For example, we now know to report any incident within a 24-hour period regardless of the day of the week, and to do so either by phone or by leaving a recorded message. Previously, we were not aware that leaving a voicemail on the weekend was an approved recorded response. We now know. Our management team has been trained on the new reporting requirements.

We also have reviewed our internal procedures for safety and hospitality training. Every employee reads and signs that they understand and will comply with our handbook. An IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions) instructional video also is part of the safety instruction. Supervisors of various attractions are trained on the specific rides. Each ride is inspected every morning and more frequently based on specific manufacturer guidelines.

While all of our employees receive training, there is additional time required in the classroom and on-the-job training for all ride personnel. Our security team also receives additional training. The waterpark staff takes water rescue and other lifesaving techniques instruction. When you add it up, Lake Winnepesaukah employees received over 2,600 hours of paid training in May and June this year.

We take seriously the safe operation of Lake Winnepesaukah so every family and every child that visits the park has a positive and memorable experience, just like the memories we’ve made over for generations.
